Saichania belongs to the group of dinosaurs known as the ankylosaurs. The ankylosaurs were herbivores with heavily armored bodies. Saichania means “the beautiful one” in Mongolian, and got this name because the first fossil that was found was so well preserved. The first fossils of Saichania were found in 1970 and 1971 in the Gobi desert.
Researchers believe that Saichania could be up to 7 meters long. Like other ankylosaurs Saichania had a dense and compact bonestructure, a short snout and a club-like protrusion at the tail. There are several theories about what the club may have been used for; simply to show off, to fight other ankylosaurs or to defend against predators.
