  • Skittles
  • Plate
Instructions

  1. Place Skittles along the edge of a plate to form a circle.

  2. Carefully pour water into the center of the plate so the Skittles are in contact with the water.

  3. Watch as a living rainbow appears – right before your eyes!

WHAT happens?

Skittles are a type of candy. When warm water is added, the outer layer of sugar and coloring quickly dissolves. The color spreads toward the center of the plate through diffusion – this means the molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration. The different colors stay separate at first because slight differences in sugar concentration create density differences in the water.
