Equipment

  • Lemon juice (you can use a fresh lemon)
  • Baking soda
  • Red cabbage extract (available here) or the juice from a fresh red cabbage. If you’re using a fresh cabbage, chop it into small pieces and pour warm water onto it to extract the colour into the water
  • Water colour paper
  • Painting brush (can be substituted for a piece of cotton)

Instructions

  1. If you’re using red cabbage extract, dissolve 1 teaspoon into 25 ml water and spread the mixture onto the water colour paper. If you’re using a fresh red cabbage, place the water colour paper on a baking tray and submerge it in the mixture, making sure that the whole paper is covered. Follow this by slowly evaporating the water in the oven at 80 degrees centigrade until the paper is dry. Make sure it doesn’t get burnt.
  2. Start painting your chemical painting and apply lemon juice and baking soda onto the paper
