Equipment
  • Whiteboard marker
  • Plate (Smooth and dry – porcelain or glass works best)
  • Lukewarm water
Instructions
  1. Draw a figure using a whiteboard marker on a dry, smooth plate.
  2. Let the figure dry completely – it only takes a few seconds.
  3. Carefully pour lukewarm water onto the plate, letting the water gently spread to cover the figure without pouring directly on it.
  4. Gently swirl the plate in small circles to loosen the figure – can you make it dance?

WHAT happens?

Whiteboard markers are designed to be easily wiped off smooth surfaces, like whiteboards or glass. When you draw on a glazed plate, which is smooth and non-porous, the ink doesn’t soak in – it just sits on top as a thin layer. If you had drawn on paper or fabric instead, the ink would stick because those materials are porous and absorb color. Whiteboard markers often contain silicone-based polymers – ingredients that make the ink slightly oily and water-repellent. Since water is polar and the ink is non-polar, they don’t mix. Instead, the water slips underneath the figure, lifting it off the plate. Because the ink layer is light and smooth, and doesn’t dissolve in the water, it floats – and your little figure looks like it’s dancing!
