Instructions

  3. Light a match and blow out the candle
  4. See if you can ignite the candle by igniting the gass that rises from the candle. Start high up and quickly work your way downwards

What happens?

Candle wax is actually not the fuel of a candle, even if that seems to make sense. The wick burns and gets heated, melting the wax directly underneath it. The wick then absorbs the melted wax, which makes it even hotter. Now the wax is so hot that it turns into a gas and evaporates. This gas is burning, not the solid wax itself. When you blow out a candle, the smoke is hot enough to be used to ignite the candle again. While this makes for an excellent magic trick, science is what lets you relight a candle without touching it with a match.
