Sometimes art and science intersect. This experiment is a beautiful example of just that.

Equipment

  • 1 glass or see-through bowl
  • Food colouring with eye droppers
  • Water
  • Shaving cream

Instructions

  1. Fill the glass 2/3 full with water. Place a layer of shaving cream on the water
  2. Drop the food colouring onto the water. Experiment with different colours and places

What happens?

The thickness of the layer with shaving cream determines how fast the colours fall through and down into the water. When the colours reach the water and have had some time to mix, they look like rain clouds.
