Did you know that water is sticky? It sounds strange, but water is so sticky that it can adhere to a piece of string. This experiment shows you how to do this nifty trick with water and string.

Equipment

  • String
  • Scissors
  • Water
  • Two containers to pour the water. One should be a beaker

Instructions

  1. Pour water into the beaker
  2. Cut a piece of string. Should measure 30-40 cm. Dip the string in water
  3. Place the string between the beaker and the other container
  4. Hold the string tightly and carefully pour water from the beaker and into the other container via the string. You have to secure the string on the insides of both containers. Experiment to find the best way of pouring

What happens?

The water is sticky because of surface tension. It follows the string rather than falling straight down onto the ground. Water likes to adhere to other substances.
