Liquids have different colours and characteristics. This classic experiment investigates the properties of various liquids and allows you to make a rainbow in a jar.

Equipment

  • A jar or tall glass
  • Honey
  • Water with food colouring
  • Blackcurrant syrup
  • Dish soap
  • Plant based oil
  • Glycerine

Instructions

  1. Pour the liquids into the jar one by one and watch as they create layers. Hold the glass tilted and pour slowly
  2. Repeat the experiment as many times as you want and see if you get the same layers every time

What happens?

Differences in density cause the liquids to layer on top of one another. The molecules are packed more tightly or more loosely together.
