Did you know that you can push a boiled egg into a bottle by changing the air pressure inside the bottle? Try and see for yourself.
Equipment
- 1 boiled
- 1 Erlenmeyer flask or bottle with a neck that is narrower than an egg. It’s important that you use a container that isn’t flammable
- Some paper
- Matches
Instructions
- Make sure an adult is there to help
- Peel the egg
- Place some paper inside the flask or bottle and light it on fire
- Place the egg over the opening of the bottleneck so that it seals shut after the paper has burnt for a few seconds
- Wait and see while the egg is sucked into the bottle
What happens?
There is always lots of air over our heads that push us downwards at any given moment. We call this air pressure. As the paper burns inside the bottle, the air becomes heated up and expands. This pushes some of the air out of the bottle. When the flame extinguishes, the air cools back down and takes up less space, which creates a lower air pressure inside the bottle. Now the air pressure inside the bottle is lower than outside the bottle and the air over the egg pushes it down into the bottle.
